When choosing between Samuel Seo’s earlier release, “D I A L,” and “UNITY II,” the choice was obvious. Both were on this list at one point. Samuel just has this endless font of musical curiosity and depth. In the end, though, “UNITY II” is too revolutionary in the grander scheme of Korea’s musical landscape. Have you ever just been mad? Just looked at something and thought, “The audacity!” Samuel Seo actually created neo soul in South Korea. Placed the genre in the country with intelligence, respect, reverence and most of all soul. It’s a love note to the genre as well as a call to action for South Korean artists to actually make the music they’re much more comfortable just imitating. A brilliant piece of music that has created in Seo a bona fide craftsman.
