Whethan – Fantasy

This album epitomizes the soundscapes and concepts of pop music in the ’80s. From the syncopated synth of the opening track (so reminiscent of the Tears for Fears accidental classic “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”) to the heavy synth-pop that follows, this is work that gives his brand of electropop a great big soul hug. It’s nostalgia, but it’s also incredibly current, buoyed by the fact that so many artists are trying to capture that Daft Punk-esque righteousness. Whethan doesn’t exactly get there, but he does give us one hell of a great album nonetheless.
